I tried UFOCapture with the Pinnacle PCTV Deluxe, but it did not work. It is a hardware compression box. The camera inputs to the box and the box outputs compressed mpeg through the USB cable to the computer. Is there a chance that UFOCapture will work with this type of box?
Another question, I noticed that many of the sample snapshots in this forum have bad interlacing artifacts. Would this problem be cured by using a very short camera cable? |

Hi David,
Any Pinnacle capture tool should work. What matters is just what enters the computer via the USB cable. I use a Dazzle. Windows operates it as WDM device via DirectShow, same as for webcams. Only with WIndows Vista I experience unreliable performance, and the device settings screen says 'lines detected 0' which is different from what I got with XP.
But what exactly did not work? You should set in UFOCapture first a resolution supported by your capture device, then preview.
Interlacing is not an artifact. The camera captures images like this. There are two different images of half vertical resolution on both framesets. For PAL one interlaced image lasts 40 ms, but contains two fields of 20 ms each. Very short-lasting events or motion cause the interlaced appearance. One could de-interlace in some video programs (requires good knowledge or instructions) and in many image editors. It gives more grainy images of low vertical resolution. One could also de-interlace two fields and blend them together which gives better results in terms of noise and resolution, but the latter still appears a bit smoothed. I have done this for most sprite images on my website.
Another thing is that many video capture boards give 720x576 resolution, which are not square pixels, so the aspect ratio is somewhat incorrect. If the image is still interlaced, it gives bad results to resize the vertical dimension, while resizing the horizontal dimension lets you lose resolution, visually. So the final images may take quite some time to edit for the best result....
cheers,

Hi
UFOCapture requires non-compressed video stream on DirectShow video capture interface for motion detection.
Most of the compression box that contains hardware encoder chip does not support this interface.
They provide only coded ( compressed ) video stream. Therefore, I think there is no chance to use it.
Please select capture device which does not have hardware encoders.
About the interlace, what Lightningwizard mentioned was perfect. Thanks > Lightningwizard |

Many thanks for that reply. The camera I just got this week is a ikegami icd-42b. Although it uses frame transfer CCD, the readout is 2:1 interlaced. |
