As far as I know, there are 2 big differences between Xp and Vista around video capturing.
1. Device driver interface has been changed.
I have more than 20 video capture equipments that were working on XP, but only a few models
are usable on Vista.
I have heard that this incompatibility become more serious on Vista sp1, that is the reason of the delay of sp1 release.
I don't know why MS makes such big incompatibility, but Oscar's problem may depend on this.
The only way to avoid this problem is to find the compatible device. Such as IEEE1394 devices.
2. File I/O sometimes becomes very slow on Vista.
Simple file operation, such as deleting, that are finished within 100msec on Xp, sometimes takes more than a few seconds on Vista.
This is the problem that causes UFOCapture unstable on Vista and I am facing to. |

Hi all, Good News
Windows Vista was improved dramatically with its SP1.
On 15th/Feb, Microsoft has released the official version of Windows Vista SP1.
Though it is provided only through their MSDN and TechNet now.
It will be distributed through Windows Update for everybody in the middle of March.
I tested UFOCaptureV2 on the systems that uses Vista SP1(6.0.6001) below.
It runs briskly like Xp. Everything becomes very smooth.
It seems the bottle neck of I/O performance was cleared.
System 1:
Core2Duo 2.4GHz
+ I/O DATA GV-VCP3R/PCI
System 2: (Dual capture)
Core2Duo 1.8GHz
+ Canopus ADVC-55(IEEE1394)
+ Canopus ADVC-55(IEEE1394)
(Two IEEE1394 interface is needed because of its bandwidth)
System 3: (Triple capture)
Core2Duo 2.4GHz
+ I/O DATA GV-VCP3R/PCI
+ Canopus ADVC-55(IEEE1394)
+ Buffallo PC-SMP2E/U2 (USB2.0)
(Three SATA 7200rpm HDD is needed)
By SP1, my impression of Vista has been changed very much.
I am hoping the performance problems on Vista is cleared now. |

Ah good, will have to test this myself! I wonder what on earth was wrong? I was beginning to think Vista was going to be remembered in the same way as Windows Millennium Edition!! |

Here is a note for UFOCapture on Vista.
I have tested clean installed Vista SP1.
There, by disabling the features below, UFOCapture became running stably.
1. HDD auto power off (power property)
2. Shadow copy of target volume ... this is very important !!
(conrol panel -> System properties -> System Protection -> automatic resotre points -> Available Disks)
To comfirm and minimize the Shadow area, run command prompt as administrator and put commands below for example.
>vssadmin List ShadowStorage
>vssadmin Resize ShadowStorage /for=d: /on=d: /maxsize=300MB
3. Indexing of target directory
4. Automatic Windows Update
5. Schedule of deflag
6. Schedule of Unti-Virus Scan |
