Hi,
We finished the installation of all eight cameras just before the thunderstorm season in Florida. And believe or not, we captured sprites on June 26 which is just 5 days after the installation. We think we captured six events on that day. Attached images are the two most impressive ones.
It would be nice if you are performing the sprite observations in Florida and we can share the results to triangulate the events. Our camera system is located in Fort Myer, FL (at the Florida Gulf Coast University). We are looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi Taka Sakamoto
Congratulations!!
Thank you for the exciting news and images.
8 cameras! that's great.
There are more than one hundred UFOCapture users in US.
But I guess that most of them are fireball seekers.... I don't know who can coop with you.
But triangulation is possible between up to 500 miles far.
So if you continue publishing your capture result with approximate event location, someone who will set up new observing system may appear soon (thus Japanese network was built).
Cheers!

Hi SonotaCo and all,
Here are the time when we observed the sprites on June 26:
00:16:00, 01:55:14, 01:59:15, 02:01:49, 02:23:06 and
02:34:23 (EDT).
I played with UFOAnalyzerV2 to get the location of those events.
Attached is the figure. My question is that the top of sprites (red
points) seems to be too far away (~300-400 km) from our camera location.
According to the Japanese sprites BBS, a typical sprite location is
100-200 km range with a similar kind of a camera configuration. I'm
wondering whether I'm doing something wrong in UFOAnalyzerV2.
I followed the manual of UFOAnalyzerV2 by 1) finding the right profile of the
camera, and then, 2) following the section 5.7. I used H1=80 km. I'm pretty
sure I got the right camera profile since the detected stars matche pretty
nicely with the catalog stars for several clips. So, I don't think I have any
error in step 1.
Do you have any suggestion/comment about my result?
Regards,
Taka[/b]

It is not improbable that you are all right and it was 300-400km.
How was the correspondence with thunder clouds position?
Let me see the image with az ev.
(Check ON "Az" on the view sheet )
Because your lens is vari focus, appearance/impression depends on the actual focul length of the lens. If f = 8mm, it may be probable. I need to know the elevation angle of the top of sprite.
(also, tune H2 when you draw the ground map to minimize the length of yellow part)

Hi SonotaCO,
Thanks for your comments.

Very nice point.
First attachment is the US radar map (http://www4.ncdc.noaa.gov/cgi-win/wwcgi.dll?WWNEXRAD~Images2) which google found for me on June 26
around 5UT. It seems like our sprite locations match very nicely with thunder
clouds positions around Bahama islands. I am convinced that we observed
sprites associated to the thunder clouds located 300-400km from the site.

The second attachment has "az" grid for one of the peak hold image of the sprite
on 1:59:15 EDT (same sprite which I attached before).

For the same sprite (detected on 1:59:15 EDT), the elevation angles (av1) are 18.08 and 18.84 (I separate it into two objects; the left side column and the right side column).

In the third attachment, I have the updated figure by minimizing the length of yellow part.
By looking at the good coincident with the radar map and the sprite locations, I am
pretty much convinced that I am doing all right, and we are indeed observing the
sprites at 300-400 km from the site which is very encouraging for us.
Thank you very much of your comment. I hope that sprite observing community will
grow in Florida area (we will try our best to increasing the observing sites around
Florida area).
Regards,
Taka

Congratulations
(20110626_015915_with_az.PNG is not AZ but Ra, its ok now)
Probably you will get many big events, pls let us see them if you get gigantic ones.
