Recently was discovered an interesting atmospheric phenomenon with yet unknown causes: the "Leaping Sundogs"
The autor of the discovery says:
Quote: | "
Years ago during museum exhibits work I was explaining rainbow optics ...and also explaining thunderstorm dynamics. I stumbled across a strange idea: shouldn't the strong electrostatic fields in thunderstorms have a visible effect on rainbows? E-fields should slightly distort falling raindrops, causing the light distribution of a rainbow to change slightly. Sometimes we should notice that a rainbow suddenly "flicks" during a lightning bolt, then slowly changes to its initial pattern as the e-fields build before another strike.
I just heard from LH and JB on youtube about three videos apparently showing this in action! But it doesn't involve rainbows. Instead it's seen with suspended ice crystals or mist droplets condensing just above a rising thunderhead, brightly back-lit by the sun. Take a look:
- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IAGE9f0K1Q large leap
- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Z_-uK5Btik small 'object'
- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sc9Ks6H3coY Malaysia
- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUcH3VClzUI small 'object' 2
Rather than distortions of droplets, perhaps these are "sundogs" or parhelia optical patterns caused by solar reflection from aligned ice crystals. A changing e-field could rotate all the ice plates or needles, causing the sundog to suddenly change shape and position. Or less likely, perhaps some condensing droplets are changing size under e-field influence (growth/shrinkage of small droplets is known to be altered by strong electrostatic fields.)
I just heard that relatively tiny e-field of 1V/mm will influence the orientation of suspenced ice crystals, and 10V/mm will totally align them. Storm fields are far stronger, so "leaping sundogs" should be quite common. See 2002 Foster/Hallett paper on ice crystal electrostatics, via Google Scholar.

Based on the movies could be UFOCapture suitable to the automated detection and record of this type of phenomenon?

This is amazing. I've read about it before but have never seen any videos. Thanks a lot for sharing. I'm sure UFOCapture can detect such thing, if only it aimed to storm tops automatically _________________ Weather & Photography

Oh! thanks for introducing. I did not know this kind of phenomena.
It reminds the timing of blue starter.
Blue events might be seen like this in daytime.
The electromagnetic field change in thunder cloud top may be volcanic.
So there may be many new unknown phenomena in many bands of emission, waiting to be found.... |

Sonotaco, you have some image or video example of Blue Jets in daytime ?
(I also first think that this phenomeon may be related with blue jets)

NO I don't have daytime ones. Because my systems are stopping in daytime
I have several clips of blue or gigantic events, but the blue part were very faint even in night. So it may be very difficut to capture them in daytime.
It seems long focal lens (close up) may be needed for this, then cloud top tracking will be necessary. Also fast frame rate system will be required because fast shutter in normall frane rate may miss very short events. |

Maybe a new register of the fenomenon, here in a supercell. Look at lights that appears and "walk" in the cloud at 0:04s of video in the point indicated in the image bellow:

This atmospheric light phenomenon now have name: "Crow Flash"
Through historical research in scientific papers found that the phenomenon had already been reported in scientific articles with the first explanation for this phenomenon was proposed in 1965.
The name Crow Flash come from a relate of the XIX century of one event which was identified as the description of the same phenomenon that been registered in the movies today.
So It seems that only the first visual records of this event could be made only now.
A good text and more new (and very impressive) movies of the "Crow Flash" can be seen here:

Images of a Flash Crown in the skies of Rome in 2002. So far it is the oldest photographic record of the phenomenon.
Below the comentary of the autor of the image:
"Note the arc: it fluctuated in size and reacted violently to the discharges within the cloud. It remains one of the strangest things I've seen"
De Crown Flash are the faint arc above the top of the cloud:

It´s interesting that the autor of the image noticed a relationship between the movement of the Crown Flash and discharges in the cloud. Can it be the first description of a possible relationship between events.

Wow.., it looks like the shape of the electromagnetic phenomenon on the sufface of the sun.
It suggests the existance of strong magnetic field, that may be requied for the explanation of the jets also.... |

Could this one be a reflection of headlights off the windshield? It would be nice to have a clip of this outside the car. _________________ What we don't grow or hunt for, we must MINE from the earth! |
