Well, within my experience, as long as using 25 to 30fps and scintillation mask ON, 4 parallel processing is required.
Typical lowest cpuclock and required bandwidth is below.
SD NTSC 720x 480x30fps = 9.9MPix/sec 1.8GHzCpu, 20MByte/s on YUVcolor
SD PAL 720x 576x25fps = 9.9MPix/sec 1.8GHzCpu, 20MByte/s on YUVcolor
XGA 1024x 768x30fps = 22.5MPix/sec 3.2GHzCpu, 23MByte/s on 8bitBW
HD 1920x1080x30fps = 59.3MPix/sec 2.6GHzCorex4, 180Mbyte/s on RGB24bit
The figure shows the only one succeeded case that I know.
It worked stably over one year, until the camera(DMC-GH2) was broken by heat.
DMC-GH2 has many overlay info on video, so it is also not-recommendable for everybody.
The point is not software but the good HD camera for night observation, many people are wait for it.

Is it possible to reduce the CPU load by skipping every 2, 4 or more lines for detection? This would probably work fine for detection of most things that move or are larger than single pixels.
best regards,
Oscar

Hi Oscar
Yes, you may be right.
But CPU is not main problem, but Raid0 with 4 HDDs is more serious problem.
We can use compressions to reduce the bandwidth,
but realtime FullHD compression requires far more CPU...It cannot be skipped
I am intending to try a Full HD capture system using Windows8 note PC,
USB3.0 HD capture device, and USB3.0 Raid0 with 2 latest HDDs.
Please wait a few months for its report.

it seems that 180 MB/s can be done easily with a single SSD, then there would be no need for compression (it can be done afterwards). A 128 GB drive then can hold 500 clips of 2 seconds. As one probably won't need to keep all files, the interesting ones can be transferred to a backup disk and the SSD can then be cleaned for the next run. But it will be very write intensive and with everyday use the SSD may perhaps not live very long?

I just found out about a RAM disk. This is software which reserves a part of the RAM and makes it available as a hard drive in the operating system. Since it is very fast to read and write to RAM, we could just select the RAM disk to save UFOCapture clips. They do have to be copied subsequently to a permanent HDD for storage, of course.
I tried Dataram RAMdisk freeware (up to 4 GB) with UFOCapture. I did not notice any reduction in file saving time, but I use Xvid compression and Windows 7/Vista always have a variable delay saving the files and getting ready to capture a new clip.
But if data bandwidth is a bottleneck, one may save some time and possibly avoid dropped frames using RAM.
Oscar

Hi Oscar,
Thank you for reporting
I'am now testing Huffyuv lossless codec with 1920x1080/60i .
The data flow bankwidth becomes almost 50MB/s
It seems storage problem can be cleared on HD.
I have restarted the development of UFOCaptureHD.
Though good camera is still very very expensive .....
Ex. Canon C100 CINEMA EOS SYSTEM can be a candidate....
Cam... 8000USD, + Lens ....

Hi Sonotaco,
I'm expecting to find an other way for full HD vidéo, it' s to use a second recording feature as full HD bridge or a camescope.
the way to explore is to use the sound signal to convert it into a remote signal to drive throught remote pin the second unit, it's not very hard to build, but could confirm when the sound is done along the time line of the detection, I mean for example :
Head is presset to 30 and tail 30 that mean that th time line is 60 frames the sound is active at 30 ?
An also other way to activate the second unit at for example : at -15 frames to avoid the loss of some pictures before the alert signal would be to have a second trigger activated at for example 50% of the value of the sound alert.( but it's software modification ?????).
This way allowed many possibilities as full HD vidéo or rafale shooting with higher definition
Best regards

This is almost correct, but ...
well, I am not sure why audio trigger concerns HD capturing, are you thinking using other HD time shift recorder, and UFOCapture to send the strigger for them?
If you know good HD time shift recorder that is not so expensive, plase let me know.
As for HD version of UFOCapture, wait just a few weeks, the program is almost fixed.
I am now writng manuals for it.
It will be ready before DMC-GH3 that comes on 17th/Dec,
Stay tuned at below

Hi Sonotaco,
good news for ,the new version, you could have a glance to sony DSLR alpha from 57, 77 and 99 type the best is 99 but the price is around 2000 euros, but it's a 25 Mpixels full HD, 25600 ISO in shooting mode or 6400 in vidéo mode.
Displsy could have no information ( but on the doc only, I've not checked my self.
But for me he size is a problem, because you must fix the APN in a waterproof container, so at the end it's a very big volume.
If I find other APN, I give you the infos without any problems
best regards
