Hi,all

In Japan, an outburst of meteor shower from northern area of Orion (Radiant point is R.A. 88deg Decl. +16deg) was detected from SonotaCo Network observation data on 24th-26th November.

Please see this URL,

http://sonotaco.jp/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1223
(Sorry, Japanese page)

We obtained 13 simultaneous meteors from 1284 single-station meteors.

I assume that this shower was same as No.72 shower by the report of Mr. Molau.

(see page 72)

I hope that European and American observers check own observation results.

A temporary orbital element is below. (Because most of meteors of this shower were short and faint, we have to analyze them again.)

sol 242.5
ra 88.0
dec 15.9
Vg 39.6km/s
a 2.8
q 0.1
e 1.0
node 62.4
peri 144.0
incl 21.9

Parameters for UFOAnalyzer is,

m_nOr 10 11 15 12 24 11 242.5 88.0 15.9 0.0 0.0 39.6 3.0 5.0 Nu-Orionides 2006

Thank you,

S.Uehara (Nippon Meteor Society, SonotaCo network)

Hi Mr Uehara, This is very good, I will check my records for any meteors that may be from this stream. Robert.

Hi all
I wrote a short mail about this outburst to Sirko Molau.
He kindly replied me the following message .
He also attempted to post it here, but it seems it was too difficult because the registration process are all written in Japanese.
This time, I post his message instead.
I am very sorry about language problems. I will take some measures in near future.

Hello SonotaCo, dear Mr. Uehara,

> http://sonotaco.jp/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1225

thanks for pointing me to this shower.

I first checked the radiant detected in the data from the previous years and
presented at the IMC. Shower #72 is a "nice" one which gives consistent radiants
positions and a well-behaved activity profile starting from mid-November until
early December. I assume it's the Monocerotids, even though the positions and
the activity interval significantly deviates from the entry in the IMO Working
List. Here are the individual radiant points I found:

sol= 234 Nov 17 alpha= 81.2 delta= 13.5 vel= 39 met= 33 / 3.6%
sol= 235 Nov 18 alpha= 81.2 delta= 13.5 vel= 42 met= 67 / 3.1%
sol= 236 Nov 19 alpha= 81.9 delta= 14.0 vel= 43 met= 112 / 3.0%
sol= 237 Nov 20 alpha= 83.5 delta= 15.5 vel= 48 met= 88 / 3.4%
sol= 238 Nov 21 alpha= 83.7 delta= 16.0 vel= 46 met= 38 / 5.0%
sol= 239 Nov 21 alpha= 85.4 delta= 15.0 vel= 45 met= 45 / 6.4%
sol= 240 Nov 22 alpha= 85.4 delta= 15.0 vel= 45 met= 54 / 7.6%
sol= 241 Nov 23 alpha= 84.4 delta= 15.0 vel= 41 met= 32 / 7.1%
sol= 242 Nov 24 alpha= 88.2 delta= 15.5 vel= 46 met= 46 / 7.8%
sol= 243 Nov 25 alpha= 88.2 delta= 15.5 vel= 45 met= 55 / 8.6%
sol= 244 Nov 26 alpha= 88.4 delta= 16.0 vel= 45 met= 46 / 8.7%
sol= 245 Nov 27 alpha= 89.8 delta= 15.5 vel= 45 met= 46 / 9.7%
sol= 246 Nov 28 alpha= 90.8 delta= 15.5 vel= 44 met= 46 / 11.8%
sol= 247 Nov 29 alpha= 90.5 delta= 16.0 vel= 42 met= 26 / 9.6%
sol= 248 Nov 30 alpha= 92.4 delta= 14.5 vel= 43 met= 31 / 8.4%
sol= 249 Dec 01 alpha= 93.2 delta= 15.0 vel= 44 met= 48 / 9.1%
sol= 250 Dec 02 alpha= 93.4 delta= 15.5 vel= 43 met= 40 / 8.7%
sol= 251 Dec 03 alpha= 93.9 delta= 16.5 vel= 44 met= 22 / 8.1%
sol= 252 Dec 04 alpha= 94.1 delta= 16.0 vel= 46 met= 13 / 4.5%
sol= 253 Dec 05 alpha= 95.5 delta= 15.5 vel= 42 met= 27 / 7.4%

Maximum activity occured at sol long 246. Once more, the radiant fits very well
with the position you are giving, only the velocity is a bit bigger in my data.
On the other hand you see, that there is some scatter in the velocity estimates.
At sol 241 I obtained the best fit at 41 km/s, for example.

What I find thrilling is the following: Mr. Ichiro Hasegawa was so kind to
compute mean orbital elements from the radiants and velocities I have
determined. The elements he computed for shower #72 fits quite well with your
data:

a = 2.782 (you: 2.8 )
q = 0.119 (you: 0.1)
e = 0.957 (you: 1.0)
node = 65.5 (you: 62.4)
peri = 142.9 (you: 144.0)
incl = 21.9 (you: 21.9)

So this is a nice proof, that it is possible to get reasonable orbital elements
from single station video data!

From Nov 24-26, 2006, I currently only have the data of my own camera AVIS2.
Given your radiant, I got the following counts (beware that in all three nights
there were clounds inbetween):

Date, Time [UT] SPO TAU AMO MON
----------------------------------------------
11/23, 22:01 - 11/24, 05:26 22 1 1 0
11/24, 17:04 - 11/25, 05:27 51 9 2 5
11/25, 23:02 - 11/26, 05:07 58 3 0 6
---------------------------------------------

I can confirm that there was some activity from the Monocerotid radiant.
I will give more details around mid-December when I got the data from the other
observers.

Best,
Sirko Molau
