I am observing satellites for many years. My goal is positional measurement of satellites position in the sky to fit satellites elements for those who are not available.
Since 2 years I am using a Mintron 12V1C-EX low light level videocamera with mostly 50mmF1.8 lens and a hauppauge tv capture card. For super correct timing I am using a gps video time inserter. Every half frame of the video stream is timestamped.
I have had problems due to my old 700 Mhz computer. I was only able to capture 5 fps in PAL video stream. I have a try with UfoCapture, but the same trouble.
Now, I am using a Celeron D (3 Ghz) cpu. The computer and other equipment now capturing 25 fps and I lost no frame. I capture 768 x 576 PAL. With all funktions in UfoCapure my cpu load is around 70 percent.
Below you see the NOSS 2-3 triplet. The leading NOSS 2-3 D is much brighter than the following 2 others. Field of view is about 7 x 5 degrees.
Best wishes
Lutz

Great!!
UFOAnalyzer can measure the position of the objects in the night sky. It may help you , though the automatic functions of it is optimized for meteors.
If you want to adjust the parameters of UFOAnalyzer for your system, send me a Mxxxxxxxx_xxxxxxM.bmp (the output of UFOCaptureV2) which contains many fixed stars, and the information below.
Longitude, Latitude, time-zone of the station, and the approx azimuth / elevation of camera.
I can calculate the parameter set for UFOAnalyzer that leads the minimum error of almost 0.2 pixel(almost 0.004deg for 50mm lens).
See the topic below.

Hi SonotaCo,
thanks for help. I have send you a privat e-mail with my coordinates.
In this case, I show you another possibility to find the correct coordinates what a star picture show. It is a little easier for the user, but heavier for the programmer.
I have a sat tool called SATREC by Rainer Kracht.
You have to type in the approx. field of view of the lens and the approx. center of field of view. (looks like UfoCapture) Then you loaded the tycho star atlas. You can see the star atlas stars as blue dots and the picture stars as white dots. (see detected.jpg)
If you see a star pattern that matches, you have only to mark three blue and three white stars and the programm automaticly shows the the field of fiew in degrees and marks recognized stars with white circles and all other (not) stars with red circles. (see results.jpg)
This means, the programm automaticly overlaps with three reference stars and you have not to change many parameter of the photo to find high correctly overlapping.
Regards
Lutz

Hi SonotaCo,
this was only an example.
When I captured a sat, I changed the camera FOV to wait for the next sat on a given place in the sky. I have to determinate every FOV for all clips I captured during a session. The camera is not fixed due to the small FOV. And my goal sats are everywere in the night sky.
Best wishes

Oh, yes I know. I had been doing just like you in several years ago when TLEs were more opened to public.
I have even tried to take a close up video of IIS using computer controlled satellite tacker and f=1500mm telescope.
There are a lot of theme that is possible but not tried. They are stacked on my desk like a mountain.
The automatic geocentric orbit calculation is one of it. But there is many things to do before it. May be we can enjoy for many years or decades.
