More than 1 month!
I passed an order and I hope that it's not so long. Sad

Hi Stephane,

Yes it takes a while as they told me originally that they build each one to order - I suspect that they don't keep stock. World wide, meteor hunters are probably a small group Smile

Let me know once you get it and start capturing some meteors - hopefully quicker than 1 month lol

Hi Daniel,
ok,
It will be my second station.
The data of my first station are available at http://www.jouin.eu/may_sur_orne.htm
and www.boam.fr (French network station based on UFOCapture) under MSO1_J1

Hi Stephane,

Very nice - I like the tabular presentation of the data on your web site. I am still working towards that kind of scientific presentation of data. I am way behind with updating my web site, however my camera is still collecting every night, well most nights as I have had technical issues.

My technical issues have been with the PC and Windows, not the camera.Sometimes UFO Capture does not start and a few times Windows updates or something has turned off my PC. So I am still ironing out the bugs in the system which will take some time as expected.

Can I ask you:
How do you automatically turn on your systems? At the moment I have a remote IP relay device that turns on at a set time everyday. I can easily turn off the system 20min before sunrise via the UPS. But to turn on the system 20min after sunset is tricker as the PC is off. I could perhaps turn it on from another PC somewhere, but that would require that pc to be on.

I am not sure if that made sense? Smile

Hi Daniel,

Thanks.

First of all, this is the schematic of my stations:
http://www.jouin.eu/may_sur_orne/detection_de_bolide/station_may_sur_orne.htm (in french)

I have sometime the same issue about systems which reboot when windows is updated. For this I use the "Startup Delayer" software (http://www.r2.com.au/software.php?page=2&show=startdelay) to run several softwares (NightSchedular, UFOcapture, ...).
Then I use the NightSchedular sofware which command an uChamelon module (http://www.starting-point-systems.com/) to power on/power off the camera.
But my PC is always power on.

Pehaps with uChameleon module it's possible to power on/off the PC with a similar NightSchedular program inside.

Hi Stephane,

You have a great setup, hopefully I can get mine to that level. I still need to work on the UFOAnalyzer part...what is PostUFO? It looks like a way to send your results to the WEB site?

Also I like the way you are also detecting meteors via radio. I wish to do that as well, but that will come later. Next semester I am doing the Radio Astronomy unit as part of my Masters of Astronomy, so hope to learn about radio astronomy so that I can apply it to meteor detection.

The uChamelon device looks good. If I can't get my components to behave then I might have to get one too Smile

Hi Daniel,

Thanks.

PostUFO is a software developped by Jean Brunet. It allows to post all UFOCapture detections on the website www.boam.fr.
This website has been developped by Jean Brunet, Tioga Gulon and me. Several French stations are registers on this website. It can be interessing to translate it in English.
The goal is in the futur that this data base can be used by REFORME network (http://www.imcce.fr/host/reforme/indexen.htm).

About uChamelon, you can buy it on ebay. The Starting Point systems (uchameleon conceptors) sell it around -50% of cost comparate with their website. Seller: leopardo42

About French map: http://www.jouin.eu/may_sur_orne/detection_de_bolide/carte_de_france_des_stations_de_detection.htm

About Fireball cam, it is between USA and France....

Hi Stephane,

That's my missing link - once I analyse the data using UFOAnalyzer I currently have no way and no where to put the data Smile

I am considering where to store my data and how to automate the process. The place that seems to make sense, considering I am starting with nothing, is VMO (http://vmo.imo.net/). There seem to be 5 pages of French observers there...are they from your group? VMO seems to be an international database. Do you replicate your data to VMO? Is VMO the international standard to store meteor detection data?

I really like your web site design by the way, its cool how you can see the individual observers detection coverage. It seems that there are advanced networks setup in Japan and France, I haven't found one in Australia yet (if someone knows where it is, please tell me).

Sonotaco - Is there a PostUFO equivalent to create XML data to upload to VMO? I noticed on your presentations to MODWG#03 "Problems of current VMO design for us -- UFOSeries for VMO"? I guess there are some challenges to overcome?

The REFORME network is composed of people which are in VMO.
I'm only registered in VMO website but I cannot send data.
At this time VMO use Metrec software. This is a very restrictive software about video card and windows (it's my view!).
It seems there are some discussion about Metrec and UFOCpature compatibility and other thing (Sonotaco is the best person to speak about it Smile ).
In the wait of this compatibility or gideline given by REFORME and/or VMO, we are made this database. We hope that in futur the data of the database will be used by REFORME/VMO or other.

This is the way I see it.

Yes I looked at MetRec, but it appears to be command line driven with no Windows UI. Also it has many EXE's, no installer and looks like it relies on Matrox cards. Life is too short for command line driven software - I am sure it does the job, but I have already suffered in the past trying to get IRAF (also largely command line driven) to run under Linux.

VMO do publish their XML standards based data format so maybe it will become the defacto standard, like FITS is for astronomy imaging. I am too new at this to really know, and I only heard about VMO a few days ago lol.

Hi Stephane,

That's great news, let us know what you think. Also post some pictures once you have it permanently mounted. Smile

Hi Daniel,

Ok,

I can give already a first feedback.

The fireball cam (WAT902-H2+TAMRON 18VA308AS) is not totally different from my first system of detection. It adds a fan and a system to evitate the condensation.

The original tuning is not in line for meteore detection: in the "black night", the camera give an image with snow. It is necessary to modify the swiths on the camera.
The video cable given is long but the cable for power is quite short.

For a test, I connected this fireball cam on Pinnacle DVC100 which is connected to Asus EEEPC EB1012 with hard drive 7200 (original hard drive is at 5400tpm). The CPU can up to 55% but not more (detection or not). It's a good news.

Hi Stephane,

Sounds like the same specs as mine, which is what we would expect.

Which switches were wrongly set? What have you got them set to now? I just left mine on default, basically due to lack of experience of what I would need. In fact I did not record my switch settings which I should have....

Hi Daniel,

I have not a long experience about cameras and meteore detection.

I have a "snow picture" again with my Fireball cam. I'm doing some tests to know why I have some noise on the video. Pehaps the video cable used, the fan with creates some harmonics or the power supply used.
I'm waiting the night to see that and to compare with my other cam.

Stephane
