Hi,
Fortune gave me another very bright fireball this morning! I was also lucky enough to catch its spectrum on one of the cameras.
When processed it looks really nice. Lots of lines, mostly the usual metals. However there are some that I will need to investigate further. The peak very close to the big sodium peak is very interesting.
cheers,
Bill.

Martin,
What plotting software do you use to produce your graphs?
Thanks,
Bill.

Hi Bill,
I use VirtualDub and IRIS for the processing of the spectra, ISIS and some nonpublished software for the calibration and Gnuplot within ISIS for plotting the spectra. I prefer ISIS to VSpec for my general spectroscopy work (echelle and LISA spectrograph) because it is more reliable. For some spectra (e.g. here: http://www.meteorastronomie.ch/ergebnisse_Spektren.html bottom of page), I use Gnuplot directly, modifying the scripts used in ISIS.
Regards, Martin

Hi,
Thanks, The gnuplot scripts are the very thing I'm trying sort out.
Cheers,
Bill.
PS I caught the fireball on another camera. This is the "correct" time. The old pc used for the spectrum was way off!

Hi,
Had a few hours clear during the Quadantids. Got a good haul on video and 14 spectra in total. But as usual only a few were useable
This was the brightest and most complete.
It was captured on the low res set with a 300 groove/mm grating.
cheers,
Bill.

Hello Bill
My name is Koji Maeda observed in Japan about N32,E131.
I 'm interesting to read this board. I like meteor spectrum, too.
I got only two Quadantids spectra in this season.
I show the better one.
Thank you.

Hi Koji,
Nice to meet you here.
That's a great spectrum. What type of camera and grating do you use?
Will you post your other spectrum please, I'd really like to see it, to see how it compares.
Cheers,
Bill.

Hi all;
I show my system, Bill.
My system is very simple.
Camera : Canon EOS6D
ISO 18000-25600, 1/30 s
lens: Sigma 35 mm F1.4
grating: Edmond 600 lines UV
software: UFOCaputureHD
I have started from Dec. 2014 for this HD video system. It is set at a window side in my house.
The window is open through observation. I only set it in a fine day.
This is a temporary setting. I hope to set outside on the roof of my house.
But it is difficult to make a housing.
I have got a couple of ten spectra for this system.
Yesterday, I got the best one!
It may be a sporadic meteor.
Thank you,
Koji

Hi,
That's a great colour spectrum.
I didn't know that the D60 could be used with UFO HD.
Does the mirror lock up have a time limit?
Regards,
Bill.

Hi Koji,
I forgot to ask, what time was your Quadrantid image taken at?
Thanks,
Bill.

Hi Bill;
>I didn't know that the D60 could be used with UFO HD.
My camera is 6D. D60 may not be able to work.
http://www.canon.co.uk/For_Home/Product_Finder/Cameras/Digital_SLR/EOS_6D/index.aspx
>Does the mirror lock up have a time limit?
Yes, there is the limit. We avoid the limit neatly that the camera is accessed EOS Utility
(Canon original software) every 15 mins by the free-software that records the moving of
mouse. The idea was found by a member of Sonotaco Net. In this way, Canon camera
works all night.
>I forgot to ask, what time was your Quadrantid image taken at?
On the 3rd Jan, I got only one Qua. and one sporadic meteor.
I got the spectrum in this season, no URS and possible two COM. The classification is observed from
single point observation.
Thanks,
Koji.

Hello Koji,
Thanks for your reply.
I am stupid! I was looking at your image with the date and time just off of the top of my screen and I am getting my camera models mixed up!
There are too many DSLR's now
best regards,
Bill.

Hi,
A nice fireball last night.
Some flaring and a big flare towards the end.
Very prominent Sodium emission.
The other faint spectrum is a neighbours kitchen light!
Cheers,
Bill.

Hi,
Got an interesting meteor over the weekend. Not very bright magnitude wise but by far the strongest OI emission at 557.7nm I seen recently.
It occured at 0508UT so was probably coming in head on and started to ablate high up where the conditions allow the fobidden OI transition to happen.
Cheers,
Bill.

Hi,
Caught a nice meteor this morning and it produced a decent spectrum. Bit shallow to the dispersion axis but very strong Mg and Na lines as well as Fe.
What was really good about this one was the fact it was caught by another observer, David Anderson.
(Dave's image is the one without the spectrum) So we can now get orbits and compositional information.
Certainly the first time anything like this has been done from Scotland (and the rest of the UK too probably)!
cheers,
Bill.
