Has anyone here used the ZWOptical camera ASI120MM or the ASI130MM for observation of meteors or atmospheric events?
If so, what are your thoughts on the camera? I may be using it to try and observe some TLEs but have been unable to find any decent test video to determine if it would be suitable for this application.
Also, how would I go about syncing up my computers clock with a GPS so that I can insert an accurate timestamp onto the video? I could probably figure it out, but while I am here asking one question, might as well ask two...

Hi
Thank you for introducing new cameras. It seems very nice ones, .....
But sorry I have no information about ZWOptical cameras.
I read its manual now but I am not sure whether it is usable or not.
Compatibility on video capture is very complex so it needs actual test.
As for GPS time stamping, there is no way to do it on Windows usb cameras.
Windows is not real time os, so task switching delay can happen any time.
In my experience, short time delay up to 300msec often happened in usual video capture modules.
So even the clock of PC is precisely correct, time stamps on windows may have error up to a few 100msec.
But I am not sure whether it is truly impossible. Very well made device driver may have its possibility.
I don't know the driver for ZWOptial is such one or not.
As far as I know, the only way to put correct GPS time stamp is to use analog time stamper to NTSC or PAL.
(yet there are some problems for low cost time stampers, their time leaps on time adjust moment)

I guess we will have to try it and I will let you know, but getting accurate time is critical. Is UFO compatible with windows only?

Yes, UFOCapture runs on Windows only.
I have tested UFOCapture time stamp accuracy using actual lightning flash, many times.
I compared times stamps of same lightning on multiple PC that are synchronized by NTP precisely.
I expected the accuracy within 17msec(one field time of NTSC) or 33msec(one frame time of NTSC) (cameras were self running and not frame synchronized).
But as the result, there happened up to 300msec random time difference among them.
It is not always but sometimes though....
So I believe DirectShow video processing on Windows can have random delay.
Yet device driver that run on hardware timing can be an exception.
So please let us know if you get good result on some hardware.

Hello,
did you think of inserting a time stamp before feeding the video into Windows, e.g. with this time stamper:

This should give you true GPS time, independent of Windows processing delays. It is used for star occultation of asteroids, where precise time is essential. A detailed analysis of residual errors of time insertion you find here:

Thanks for info. The page seems great!
But the ZWOptical cameras are not NTSC nor PAL. It is USB digital camera.
So analog timestampers cannot be used.

I received a mail concerning AS1120MM from some researcher.
He got this camera and now testing with UFOCapture.
It seems there are some incompatibility.
But test is not ended.
Stay tuned. I will report about this again.

Ours just came in and I have been trying to set it up on UFO to test it.
So far I am running into a problem that I am hoping you have a solution for. Whenever I preview the video from the camera, it has a bunch of weird, colorful, noise on the image. It is almost like the colors are inverted, but it is a monochrome camera. And the image is flipped vertically.
Whenever you stop the preview the image on the program goes back to what it is supposed to be.
Any ideas on how to fix this issue?

I guess AS1120MM uses new 12bit monochrome format that is not prepared by UFOCapture.
Currently UFOCapture supports 8 bits formats only.
I am willing to develop the handler for new formats if they are actually useful for meteor/TLE observation.
But there has been no USB2.0 camera that is usable for fast and faint motin detection,
Fast frame rate using short time shutter is nesessary for it.
Even ImagingSource camras, their sensitivity was not enough on normal frame rate (1/25 or 1/30 sec shutter) .
And often there is lens limitation.
It seems it may be difficult to find a good lens (30degree fov or wider and F1.0 or faster) for AS1120MM.
Could you show me some frame image sample of wide night sky that is taken on 1/25 or 1/30 second shutter ?
If its sensitivity is enough (if there are enough reference star imaged), I will get this camera and develop a handler for UFOCapture.

We have done some preliminary testing of this camera in low light and it looks promising. When we get the camera set-up for night observation (hopefully next few days, waiting for parts) then I will be sure to send you a sample of what we got.

I bought ASI1200MM and tested.
But sorry, it is not compatible with UFOCapture.
Its driver is very unique, it does not use fourcc code nor do not respond to set media type query ......
I gave up to use this.

That would be three strikes for this camera.
We have been waiting for a lightning storm to finish testing it for our purposes but so far we can barely pick up stars in the night sky with it. And when we do, the picture is excessively noisey, and frame rate is low.
Then we were going to try to put a different lens on it, but it needs some hard to find adapter, and on top of that it will not work with an auto-iris lens.
Now it will not work with UFOCapture. Oh well, it seemed promising at first. The next camera we are looking at is significantly more expensive, but it should do the job much better.

Oh! another one.
Well I will test Sony alpha7s after its release(20/jun). It seems it is truly promising. 4K with ISO > 100000 !!.
It is surely high cost. But how about doing what was impossible in the past, by using the latest technology?
