Does anyone have a UFO capture v2 system running with two PCI-express / SD-video capture cards ? In future, I consider of moving to PCIe capture cards, mainly for the second camera addition.
Another reason is that I also plan to setup amateur radio station (with radio transmitter) to same remote site, that will also increase amount of RF-radiation. Capture cards inside of metal PC enclosure is better protected from external RF-field.

I planned to use two Hauppauge cards (model 01381) on one PC. I have two free slots on the PCI-e bus, so that shall provide enough bandwitdh ? Is there anyone who has tested this setup ?
http://www.hauppauge.com/site/products/data_impactvcb.html

My win7 PC is based on Core i5-3470 @3.20GHz processor (4 cores). I assume this should be powerful enough?

Currently on single camera system I have two external hard drives, connected to eSATA 3Gb/sec interface. It works fine for one camera,
and estimated write speed with bencmark software gives 100...110 MB/sec. I write files for current camera to primary drive, and make a periodic backup during daytime to secondary drive.

Would this disk setup be sufficient for two cameras same time, if they both are defined to save video stream from UFO capture v2 to a common HDD drive ?
I understood that two cameras still produce together a video data rate of approx 50MB/sec - am I right ?

On some other threads here, disk seek time was mentioned. Would it be issue, if two cameras video is saved simultaneously to single HDD drive ?

If one HDD is not sufficient, I could consider single SSD for two camera video storage. And periodically moving & backing up files to external (larger capacity) eSATA hard drive, when system is not detecting...

Sorry I don't know Hauppauge devises, but I am operating a system shown in the figure below.
points are...
-- Different capture device (that uses another device driver) usually works simultaneously well.
-- IEEE1394 capture devices that uses Windows built in driver can be used simultaneously.
-- one IEEE1394 interface chip is almost full for only one SD. So multiple IEEE1394 interfaces should be used for multiple cameras.
-- IEEE1394 interfaces with TI chip are simultaneous operatable up to 4 instances (PCI and PCI-ex can be mixed).
-- IEEE1394 interface with VIA chip can be used only one.
-- USB2.0 capture devices can be used with IEE1394, but same product is usually limited to one.
-- PCI or PCI-ex bus itself has enough bandwidth for up to 4 SD.
-- more than 4 simultaneous capture cannot be handled by Windows.
-- HDD must be dedicate for each camera.

Yes it is enough.

Each camera should use each dedicate drive.

Yes

Yes, the seek time problem is serious on HDD.

Please let me know if you got success!

thanks for comments...

there is HDD/SSD related question. Based on comments I understood it is not worth of attempting to save two SD camera video stream into single HDD. Last time I bought a SSD to my home PC, it did show approx 400MB/s write speed. So in this point it shall handle two video streams. Following wiki article about HDD/SSD seek times:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_disk_drive_performance_characteristics

for traditional HDD, seek time was mentioned to be around 9ms. For the SSD, it was estimated at 0.08...0.16ms. So roughly it makes 1/50...1/120 of the HDD seek time.

-> can one 6Gb/s SATA3 SSD handle two SD video streams, regarding to seek time requirement ?
-> when there is two UFO analyser v2 running, do they simultaneously begin to write at common SSD disk, or does the second "copy" wait, until write operation in first copy is completed ?

I guess it will be OK, but I am not sure.
It will cause random access to the SSD. So the writing speed may be different. It needs actual test.

As a device, one SSD allows only one operation at a time, so the second operation will be queued until the first operation is finished.
But this queuing is done in system level so any application can issue write command simultaneously.
As for UFOCapture, every part is running frame by frame, so it will be ok if all one frame task is finished within a frame time.

Again very useful information Smile I will select the SSD for my future setup as common two camera drive. I will later put information here, of the results.

I also sent tech support request at Hauppauge to ensure that capture card driver(s) will allow multiple cards on one PC. Have not yet got response...

I got following info from tech support of Hauppauge Impact VCB capture card (PCI-e):
"Drivers are WDM direct show compliant."

-> Is this the application interface that UFO capture v2 uses ?

UFOCapture uses DirectShow video capture interface. WDM is one of it.
But, DirectShow video interface is very complex and delicate, the implementation differs depending on the manufacturer of the device driver so every product should be tested actually at least once, specially about simultaneous opratability.

below I summarize comments I got from Hauppauge tech support, for Impact VCB PCI-e cards:
***************************
multiple cards:
"Yes you can have two Impact VCBe cards installed and running in Wintv with two separate inputs"

driver support:
"...not sure about third party apps but two instances of the driver can be installed"

video interface to windows:
"Drivers are WDM direct show compliant"

op system versions:
"the drivers work with Windows 7 as well as Windows 8, 8.1"

Two Hauppauge PCI-e cards have arrived. Lens for the second camera in order at the moment. Also Samsung 840 series SSD plus installation kit - order ongoing. Current estimate is that if could get the needed component(s) in time, then check the system within next 1...2 months.

This weekend I will go to remote camera location for setting up system. What would be suitable test setup, assuming if that two capture cards and cameras are operating correctly ?

I mean a situation, where two cameras are writing to common SSD. Myabe a test setup (on brighter mid-day) where for example flying bird passes by the view of both cameras same time. Or I could drop a small metal object in field of view cameras. Then follow, is every frame saved correctly - and no dropped frames in between ?

EDIT: the outdoor enlosure of the two cameras, not possible to install yet - some accessories missing.

I had first time now installed two cards (Hauppauge). System claimed that the installation of second card drivers were done OK.

When starting up (either preview or detect), I got an error "UM012:media type not matched" on UFO capture. Where does this error point to ?

I only started a single copy of UFO capture. I was able to see two cards in video source selection. Both of them as source, gave same error...

When I removed second card, UFO capture cannot start due to UM012 error. One option is that I reset again the UFO capture...

-two Hauppauge cards now operate at same time with 640*480 resolution - only preview mode of UFO capture v2 tested. Problems on activating 720*576, testing continues later...
-detection of two cameras, to be tested until UFO capture preferences/setup confirmed

Hauppauge cards work now with 720*576 resolution. Last night was the first, when two cameras operating same time. No meteor trails yet due to clouds... Two copies of UFO capture v2 running, both write at same SSD. I think I need wait, until some bright meteor is visible in both cameras, to check that saving works ok...

Comments about SSD drive (Samsung 840 pro series)... It was listed as 6Gb/s SATA3 interface. And the maximum write speed was estimated to be a bit over 500MB/s.

In my tests it only shows approx half of this. Most probably the reason is that PC motherboard SATA connection was only 3Gb/s type. Do not know yet tools to confirm this under win7. If it still works ok (by write speed requirements) for two cameras data stream of 2*25MB/s -> to be confirmed later with capture samples...
